Auspicious Beasts (Zuiju) - Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams
In the design of the Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams, the outermost circle features a divine beast with four arms, glaring eyes, and bared fangs. In Tibetan, it is called "Tsepa'za" (兹巴扎) and is also referred to as "Rahu" (羅睺) or "Tai Sui Xing Jun" (太歳星君). According to the description in "White Glaze" (白琉璃), before the formation of heaven and earth, this divine beast was said to be a large golden turtle.
The inner circle is the Post-Heaven Bagua diagram, which may differ from the Post-Heaven Bagua diagram of Han territory (mainland China). Common changes in hexagram positions include Zhen (震), Xun (巽), Kun (坤), and Dui (兑), which represent the eight types of things: fire, earth, marsh, sky, water, mountain, thunder, and wind.
The inner circle is modeled after the nine sections of a turtle's shell, in accordance with the principle of "Dai Jiu Li Yi, Er Si Wei Jian, Liu Ba Wei Zu, Zuo San You Qi" (戴九履一、二四為肩、六八為足、左三右七) from Han culture, and is divided into nine numbers. Each number corresponds to a different color and hexagram (卦象), encompassing all aspects of time, direction, feng shui, and geography.
Zodiac Surroundings
The outer design of the Bagua is usually surrounded by patterns of the twelve zodiac animals. These represent the twelve types of animals that signify the years in the Chinese zodiac (Jūnìchī) and, when combined with the Heavenly Stems (Tiāngān), form the sixty Jiazi (Liùshí Jiǎzǐ), symbolizing each year and the corresponding zodiac animal of one's birth year.
About the material
